The Next AI Winners May Not Be AI Companies

By:- Shresth Khugshal

Everyone is watching Nvidia, Microsoft and the companies building AI.

But the next wave of winners may come from businesses that use AI to become better businesses.

That shift is already visible. McKinsey’s latest research found that about 80% of employees say AI improves their productivity, yet only 37% of organizations report a positive impact on earnings. The technology is spreading faster than the financial benefits.

This gap could define the next stage of the AI boom.

Look Beyond the AI Giants

Walmart is using AI across merchandising, supply chains and operations. JPMorgan Chase is applying it across areas including fraud detection and financial analysis. These companies don’t need to build the next frontier model. They need AI to make their existing businesses faster, cheaper or more productive.

Siemens offers another clue. The industrial company is expanding electrical infrastructure and manufacturing capacity specifically to meet demand from data centres and AI infrastructure. Its industrial business reported €2.9 billion in profit in Q1 2026, up 15% year over year.

The opportunity, therefore, isn’t limited to selling AI.

It extends to selling the electricity, equipment, infrastructure and services that allow AI to scale and to businesses using AI to improve their own economics.

But AI Adoption Isn’t Enough

This is where investors need to be careful.

If every competitor can access similar AI tools, simply saying “we use AI” creates little lasting advantage.

The real winners will be companies where AI eventually shows up in:

higher margins → lower costs → better productivity → stronger cash flow.

India’s $315 billion IT-services industry is already experiencing this pressure. Clients are demanding more output for less money, pushing companies away from traditional hourly billing toward contracts based on measurable outcomes.

AI is therefore not just another technology upgrade.

It is beginning to change how businesses are priced, operated and valued.

The Question Investors Should Ask

Don’t ask:

“Is this an AI company?”

Ask:

“Is AI making this company economically better—and can that advantage last?”

The next AI winners may be hiding in banks, retailers, factories, logistics companies and infrastructure businesses.

They may never put “AI” in their name.

They may simply be the companies that learn how to turn AI into money.
